João Neves is a 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder who rose through SL Benfica before securing a €65.92m move to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2024, signing a contract until 2029.

He made his debut for the Portuguese national team in October 2023, highlighting his rapid progression to the highest level.

Despite his age, he has already won major honours with both Benfica and PSG, including league titles, domestic cups, and the UEFA Champions League, as well as the UEFA Nations League in 2025 with Portugal.

In this João Neves scout report and player analysis, we will examine João Neves' key strengths, his evolution as a midfielder at the highest level, and his role in Luis Enrique tactics at PSG.

João Neves Attacking Style Of Play

    Build-Up

In the build-up phase, João Neves operates as a key connector in central midfield, constantly offering himself as a reliable passing option to progress through pressure zones.

One of his main strengths is his ability to receive under pressure and stabilise possession.

Through constant scanning, intelligent body orientation, and clean first touches, he protects the ball effectively even in tight situations.

    He rarely panics when pressed.

Instead, his balance and coordination allow him to absorb contact and maintain control.

His efficiency in tight spaces is particularly valuable, often using one- or two-touch combinations to escape pressure and sustain possession.

João Neves is also very effective at playing in tight spaces, often using quick one-touch or two-touch combinations to escape pressing traps.

Rather than forcing risky passes, he prioritises continuity, constantly creating new passing angles and supporting the team’s structure.

When Achraf Hakimi moves into central or advanced areas, Neves often drops into the right-back zone during build-up.

This positional rotation maintains balance and ensures structural stability while allowing Hakimi to influence higher zones.

This role suits Neves well, as he has previously operated as a right full-back for Portugal, highlighting his versatility and tactical flexibility.

Chance Creation & Final Third Impact

João Neves' heat map shows that he is highly active across the pitch, particularly in half-spaces.

He appears frequently in the right half-space, where he consistently supports the player on the ball by offering a close and safe passing option.

From this position, João Neves helps maintain possession under pressure and creates better angles for circulation.

Beyond simple support, he plays an important role in switching the point of attack, quickly moving the ball to the weak side to exploit space and disorganise the opposition.

His awareness and decision-making allow him to recognise when to accelerate play with a switch or when to keep the ball.

When Hakimi moves into central areas, Neves appears higher in the wide right channel.

This movement helps maintain width, ensuring the team does not lose balance when Hakimi leaves his position.

This highlights strong tactical intelligence and discipline.

João Neves is not traditionally known for scoring and assisting, and his statistics across previous seasons reflect that reality.

His role has been primarily focused on controlling the tempo, linking play, and ensuring stability in possession rather than being a decisive player in the final third.

However, this is an area he is clearly aware of and is actively working to improve in order to become a more complete midfielder.

In his game, we can see a clear intention to contribute more in the attacking phase, as he increasingly arrives in the box and makes depth runs.

This has led to more goalscoring opportunities, often outside the box after cutbacks, or through well-timed movements into the area, where he has scored in a variety of ways, including acrobatic finishes, headers, and rebounds.

    The progression is already visible.

This season, João Neves has already surpassed his goal tally from each of the previous three senior seasons, showing a clear step forward in his offensive contribution.

This improvement suggests a growing confidence in attacking situations, as well as better timing in arriving into dangerous areas.

A key milestone in this evolution came with the Portuguese national team, where João Neves scored his first international goal on the same day he registered his second career hat-trick, against Armenia.

His first hat-trick had come earlier against Toulouse, in a remarkable performance that included two bicycle kick goals, highlighting not only improved output but also unexpected finishing ability.
