Who Is Trey Nyoni?

Trey Nyoni has long been touted as a potential star in the making, with the midfielder having joined Liverpool from Leicester City in 2023 at the age of just 16.

The midfield was also an area of the pitch that struggled under Arne Slot last season, and it's one around which questions have remained this summer, with Andoni Iraola now in the hot seat at Anfield.

Curtis Jones looks likely to leave (and only has a year left on his contract).

Alexis Mac Allister came back late to pre-season (as did Ryan Gravenberch, albeit slightly earlier) due to his long stay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

That opened up an opportunity for Nyoni to get minutes in the new-look system on the pre-season tour of America.

It's an opportunity he's taken.

The Reading-born midfielder featured in every game so far in pre-season.

It's changed the narrative around him completely.

At the beginning of the summer, the plan seemed to be that he would go out on loan to get senior minutes.

He's now firmly in the first team plans at Anfield, with murmurings that even if Jones is sold, there won't be a midfielder signed so that Nyoni can get minutes.

This Trey Nyoni scout report and player analysis looks at how he's played himself into Iraola's plans during pre-season, and what he could offer Liverpool this term.

Trey Nyoni Positioning

Nyoni is still at the stage of his career where he's not been clearly defined in one midfield role.

His senior minutes have mainly come from the bench.

Last season, he made 14 appearances in total for the first team, making just two starts.

He was on the pitch for a total of 246 minutes (that's 2.7 full games).

When he did come onto the pitch last season (which was just 21 minutes in the league), he'd tend to occupy higher positions.

Arne Slot either didn't trust him in that deeper role or (and this was more so the case) they were chasing the games.

He is much more natural, though, someone who is comfortable in all phases of the play.

You will see him dropping deep to receive the ball, you will see him being comfortable carrying the ball through the middle of the pitch, and you are also just as likely to see him being incredibly influential in the final third, particularly in youth football.

For Iraola he's someone who has become a legitimate option in the double pivot at the base of midfield.

Let's have a closer look at why.

Trey Nyoni In The First Phase Of Possession

One of the biggest reasons why Nyoni has received so many plaudits in pre-season is how comfortable he is in the first phase of possession.

He's been absolutely key to Andoni Iraola's build-up plan.

Above are just two of countless occasions where he is the deepest midfielder, looking to receive the ball from either the goalkeeper or centre-backs.

This allows the central defenders to split out wide, and the full-backs to push up high.

One of Nyoni's biggest strengths is his ability to receive the ball in these areas.

It may seem like a minor thing, but having a midfielder who has the ability to take the ball facing the goal under pressure, scan and then either recycle the ball back or turn and face the opposition can make a world of difference.

Iraola wants his team to be able to build up quickly, and Nyoni is suited to this.
