A move to Barcelona is a dream for any young footballer, but it rarely comes as quickly as it has for “The Egyptian Haaland," Hamza Abdelkarim, who went from Al Ahly’s academy to a place in Hansi Flick’s first-team squad in under a year.

The transition is rarely simple for an 18-year-old.

It means a new country, a new league, and a new style of football, with the pressure of being the first Egyptian to play for this gigantic club.

Hamza Abdelkarim (182cm, 82kg) joined Al Ahly’s academy in 2020 and made his senior debut in February 2025, aged 17, becoming the club’s youngest first-team player in more than 20 years.

Minutes were limited, though, and in the winter window of 2026 he joined Barcelona on loan with a purchase option.

He settled in fast, scoring on his debut for the under-19 side against Huesca and then a hat-trick against UD Montecarlo.

In June, Barcelona exercised the option, signing him until 30 June 2029.

He then helped Egypt reach the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup before returning to Barcelona for pre-season.

It was there that he made his case.

He enjoyed a stellar pre-season and finished as the club’s leading scorer.

Flick praised his ability to attack crosses and retain possession.

Yet, his minutes remain limited, with Flick saying Barcelona are still looking to strengthen their attack.

He recently renewed his contract with Barcelona until 2030 with a release clause of €150m, following his impressive pre-season stint.

This Hamza Abdelkarim scout report and player analysis looks at Hamza Abdelkarim’s style of play and what he offers Barcelona in 2026/2027, with a focus on his role as a target man and how his game compares with the club’s other strikers.

A Textbook Target Man

The 18-year-old plays as a traditional target man, winning headers, finding space, making acrobatic moves, and more.

He plays similarly to Haaland, minus the polished attributes.

Football Zones Map

Abdelkarim is most present in “Zone 17," as seen in the diagram above.

He makes all sorts of micro-movements and anticipates space in this zone while trying to find openings aerially or with the ball to his feet.

In Figure 1, we see a cross coming in, and Abdelkarim utilises the space given to him and anticipates the trajectory of the ball while remaining in the defender's blind spot.

In Figure 2, we can see how he shifts his momentum towards the ball’s trajectory by the very end and, using his flexibility, gets the last touch on the ball with maximum power as he scores.

We see his exceptional movement in the box and his ability to convert goals out of loose balls that wouldn’t normally be an opportunity.

Luckily for the Egyptian, they are.

This instinct is natural and instantaneous; whenever Abdelkarim plays, he admires the cross and directs his entire body towards it.

This is particularly challenging for someone 6'0 tall to do.

Abdelkarim, although he makes it look easy and displays it exceptionally, performs it multiple times throughout his career, showing us his agility in the air and his flexibility in general.
