PSG Vs Olympique Lyonnais [2–0] – Ligue 1 2026/2027: How Did PSG Break Compact Lyon Defence? – Tactical Analysis
PSG beat Lyon 2-0 despite being frustrated for over an hour. This tactical analysis examines Lyon’s changing defensive shapes, PSG’s attacking creativity and high press, and how Luis Enrique’s substitutes ultimately changed the game.
PSG hosted Olympique Lyonnais at the Parc des Princes for gameweek eight of Ligue 1 2026/2027, and the clash ended with a crucial 2-0 victory for PSG.
It is a win that comes during a somewhat complicated period following the injuries of some of their best players, Marquinhos, Ousmane Dembélé, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
That said, the team performed well despite the difficulties in the first 60 minutes and the failure to score in that period.
Luis Enrique’s side showed a lot of consistency and variety in their attacking performance and confirmed that they are not a team that gives up easily.
On the other side, Paulo Fonseca’s team surprised followers of Ligue 1 with a convincing performance that disturbed PSG and could have made their mission even more complicated.
Olympique Lyonnais succeeded in defending in a compact way and in alternating their defensive approach throughout the match to disturb PSG’s plans, while succeeding in creating some very dangerous counterattacks.
In the end, the quality of the players made the difference, and Olympique Lyonnais failed to convert their created chances mainly due to the finishing accuracy that needs further consideration.
In this tactical analysis, we explore PSG’s attacking variation and solutions, while also considering how Olympique Lyonnais disturbed PSG’s plans thanks to their varied defensive plans and tactics.
PSG Vs Olympique Lyonnais Lineups & Formations

PSG Lineup Vs Olympique Lyonnais
Enrique preferred to start the match using a 4-3-3 formation with Matvey Safonov as the goalkeeper, and a defensive line made up of Achraf Hakimi at right-back, Illia Zabarnyi and Willian Pacho at centre-back, and Warren Zaïre-Emery at left-back.
In midfield, Enrique relied on the following midfield trio: Vitinha, Fabián Ruiz, and João Neves.
In attack, he opted to use Désiré Doué on the left wing while relying on Maghnes Akliouche on the right wing.
Enrique used Ferran Torres up front, given that Ousmane Dembélé was absent due to injury.
Olympique Lyonnais Lineup Vs PSG
For Olympique Lyonnais, Fonseca used the 4-3-3 formation too, with Dominik Greif as the goalkeeper, and a defensive line made up of Zachary Athekame as a right-back, Felix Bacher and Moussa Niakhaté as centre-backs, with Abner Vinícius as a left-back.
In midfield, Fonseca used the trio of Tyler Morton, Tanner Tessmann, and Corentin Tolisso, while the attacking line was composed of Ernest Nuamah and Julien Duranville on the wings, and Khalis Merah as the team’s striker.
Olympique Lyonnais Defensive Approach
The match started with almost total domination for PSG in terms of possession, but without a lot of attempts on goal since Olympique Lyonnais adopted a defensive approach that obliged PSG to think wisely and patiently about how to reach their opponent’s goal.
Olympique Lyonnais did not use a high or mid-defensive block but preferred to rely on a low block in order to secure their goal and prevent the quick transitions, which they knew would be complicated for their defence to resist.
That’s why the most suitable approach, according to Fonseca, was to retreat completely at first to absorb PSG’s intensity and use compact defensive lines to prevent PSG from attacking easily, and at the same time wait for suitable counterattacking possibilities.
It is a plan that was changed during the match too, as Fonseca tried to make the defensive line get higher as the time progressed, to further compress PSG’s possession zone and make it more complicated for them to keep possession or find vertical solutions.
Fonseca also alternated between the 5-2-3 formation and the 4-3-3 formation in the defensive phase, in order to condense areas inside and near the box by dropping one of the midfielders.
The problem for Lyon is that PSG are already used to such scenarios and knew exactly how to deal with them, as they didn’t look surprised or in difficulty when this happened.
Fonseca’s plan was successful in the first period of the match as PSG looked unable to create concrete threats on Olympique Lyonnais’ goal.
Afterwards, the changes regarding the positioning of the defensive block from low to mid and sometimes to high and vice-versa disturbed PSG and made them unable to use an obvious strategy that suits a specific defensive approach since Olympique Lyonnais’ defensive organisation was changing in almost every conceded attack or two.

PSG Attacking Creativity
With time, PSG found solutions, especially through consistent switches of play, and intelligent passes from the wings towards the box or the edge of the box where midfielders were advancing.
The addition of Ruiz, Neves, and Vitinha in such situations was extremely useful as they were the ones surprising Olympique Lyonnais’ defence by advancing from the back and either providing key vertical passes or receiving final passes and shooting from distance.
This was one of the times when Ruiz attempted to shoot on goal following a pass from Hakimi, and this proves that PSG knew that their striker would be marked in such moments and that it would be preferable to opt for less expected passing destinations in order to surprise the opponent’s defence.
In fact, the action saw Neves hold the position of a second striker, receiving the ball in that area while attracting defenders.
Such movements from these defenders helped in creating a numerical superiority in some areas, as it helped the ball holder find vertical passing options without having to force a pass to the tightly-marked Torres.
Neves was able to avoid markers and pass the ball to Hakimi, who, in turn, was intelligent enough to return the ball towards the edge of the box, where both Ruiz and Vitinha were waiting for such an inviting shooting possibility.
