AFC Bournemouth have strengthened their defence by signing Portuguese centre-back António Silva from Benfica for a reported fee of €25-30m.

The move came during a summer of major change at the Vitality Stadium, with Andoni Iraola leaving to join Liverpool after he'd guided the club to a sixth-place finish before Marco Rose took charge.

Following Marcos Senesi's transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, the Cherries needed a new central defender, making Silva a logical addition.

Standing tall at 1.87 metres tall, António Silva has the characteristics required for a modern defender.

With the body features of an ectomorph, characterised by long limbs and a smaller upper body, his style of play is more focused on mobility and agile movements than physical prowess. 

His frame enables him to move effortlessly to the different areas of the pitch while he is able to maintain balance and composure, engaging in physical duels and dealing with sudden lane shifts from attackers.

His running style is characterised by medium-length strides, which do not allow him to accelerate efficiently and reach top speed in a short space of time.

According to UEFA Champions League data, he has recorded a top speed of 30.1 km/hr, which shows that while he cannot be the fastest defender on the pitch, he certainly makes it up with defensive intelligence and work rate.
