The first action of the match was already very telling as it shed light on Manchester United’s extremely passive defensive approach when dealing with Fulham in possession.

Manchester United looked too reluctant to prevent Fulham from advancing, whether through the middle or from wide areas, as all of the players were static and only ran after their direct opponents once it was too late.

In other words, this passive approach allowed Fulham's players to provide passes between the lines, make use of one-two combinations and advance through the wings with ease and without concrete disturbance from Manchester United players.

In fact, Fulham looked like they were playing with a different rhythm from the start, since Manchester United’s slow defensive reactions and anticipatory marking were very poor and disappointing.

The perfect example of this passive attitude was letting King penetrate without any disturbance in the following attempt, with no one really challenging him.
