Top Serie A Goalscorers 2025/2026: Lautaro Martínez & The Capocannoniere Race – Data Analysis
The curtains are about to close on the 2025/2026 Serie A season, and the battle for the league's top goalscorer has been more or less decided, with Lautaro Martínez at the top of the list on 17, four ahead of second place.
He is now just one gameweek away from becoming the official winner of the Capocannoniere award.
Despite the injuries of Martínez, which obliged him to miss several Serie A games, he was still capable of topping the list of goalscorers with 17 so far.
Behind him, we find different players from AS Roma, Como, Juventus, Udinese, Napoli, Atalanta, and Torino, all within the top 11 goalscorers this season.
What is remarkable is that the number of goals is a bit low compared to the other top European leagues, as Erling Haaland scored 26 goals in the Premier League this season, Kylian Mbappé scored 28 goals in La Liga, and Harry Kane tops the Bundesliga goalscorers list with 36 goals so far.
In this data analysis article, we compare the different top Serie A goalscorers and explore their statistics and performances this season, with more focus on the top-five goalscorers in particular.
Serie A Top Goalscorers 2025/2026

The above list shows the top scorers in Serie A this season, with Martínez topping the list, Marcus Thuram, Donyell Malen, and Anastasios Douvikas in second place with 13 goals each.
Malen is in the top goalscorers list despite having only joined Serie A and Roma for half the season.
In 17 appearances, Malen scored 13 goals and provided two assists, proving himself to be one of Roma’s best attacking signings in the last few years.
Malen’s goalscoring trends and averages are quite telling, as they imply that if Malen had joined Serie A at the start of the season, he would most likely have battled Martínez for the Serie A leading goalscorer title, with a high possibility of finishing the season as the Capocannoniere.
Apart from Thuram, who has also been impactful at Inter Milan, especially during Martínez’s periods of absence, the inclusion of Douvikas and Nico Paz as fourth and fifth on the goalscorers’ list can only mean that both players had a huge role in making Como a team that battles for a UEFA Champions League spot until the last fixture.
Behind both Paz and Douvikas were the players who scored 10 goals this season: Kenan Yıldız, Keinan Davis, Rasmus Højlund, Gianluca Scamacca, Giovanni Simeone, and Nikola Krstović.
Goals Vs xG
To further explore the performances of the top-five goalscorers in Serie A, it is important to look at their overall xG and compare it to their actual number of goals this season.
This can be quite useful in identifying who achieved better goalscoring numbers compared to what was expected and who was not as clinical as expected in terms of goalscoring.
If we look at the following graphic, what is remarkable is that Martínez has the best numbers, and that is reflected in his xG and in his actual number of goals.
With a total xG of 13.11, Martínez has scored 17 goals so far, meaning he has exceeded expectations despite not playing consistently due to injuries.
The second remarkable goalscorer in this graphic is Malen, having almost the same xG as Martínez.
He succeeded in scoring 13 goals in half a season, and that’s an even more impressive number compared to Martínez’s, since the difference in the number of participations is significant between the two.
In Serie A, Malen had 17 appearances, whereas Martínez played in 29 games, which favours Malen in terms of goalscoring efficiency when comparing both players’ goalscoring impact per match.
Although Paz is not a proper striker like the rest of the top-five goalscorers, he proved this season that his goalscoring numbers are good enough for him to be considered among the list.
Paz overachieved in terms of goalscoring as his xG was the lowest among the expected goals averages of the five players.
Despite that, he still succeeded in scoring 12 goals, a number that is very close to that of Thuram, Douvikas, and Malen.
Both Douvikas and Thuram had a higher number of goals in comparison with their total xG, and that means that both players overachieved in terms of goalscoring as well.

Shots Per 90 x Shots On Target
Another aspect that helps in measuring these goal scorers’ impact and efficiency inside the box is the consideration of their total number of shots versus their percentage of shots on target.
This allows us to further examine the players’ accuracy in terms of shooting and how consistent they are in terms of threatening the opponent’s goal.
In this regard, the graphic confirms that Malen is the striker who shoots the most in Serie A, with 3.87 shots per game and a relatively good percentage of shots on target, 44.4%.
Paz comes second in terms of the number of shots, as he therefore attempts more shots than proper strikers like Martínez, Thuram, and Douvikas.
But the issue with Paz is that his percentage of shots on target is the lowest among the five players.
Therefore, it will be crucial for him to work on improving this aspect ahead of next season.
Both Martínez and Thuram shoot fewer shots than Paz and Malen but have higher average shots-on-target, making them more dangerous on goal.
At the same time, Douvikas’ shooting stats are outstanding, with 50% shots on target for only 2.2 shots attempted per game.

Assists Vs Expected Assists
When it comes to assist-making and key passing, the classification changes significantly, as not all of the outstanding goal scorers are impactful in terms of assist-making.
